Permanent Residence Card: Important Change from 3 August 2026

Permanent residence cards issued between 03/08/2016 and 02/08/2021 to third-country national family members of EEA nationals will cease to be valid from 03/08/2026.

Based on the information published by the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (OIF), permanent residence cards issued between 3 August 2016 and 2 August 2021 to third-country national family members of EEA nationals will cease to be valid from 3 August 2026, as these documents do not meet the currently applicable security requirements.

Given that the relevant Hungarian legislation has changed since the issuance of these documents, the affected persons do not need to apply for a simple replacement of the document; instead, they must apply for another Hungarian residence status.

According to the authority’s information, each affected person will receive a detailed official notification letter by post, sent to their valid registered place of residence or accommodation.
