Update on the entry requirements for the United Kingdom – ETA requirement (2026)

From 25 February 2026, entry to the United Kingdom is only possible with a valid ETA for nationals of non-visa countries, including EU citizens. It is recommended to apply at least 3 working days before travel, as airlines may refuse boarding if the required authorisation is missing.

From 2 April 2025, the UK government introduced a requirement that nationals of non-visa countries – including citizens of the European Union – must hold an electronic travel authorisation (ETA – Electronic Travel Authorisation) in order to enter the United Kingdom.

During the phased rollout of the system, the UK authorities provided for a grace period; however, from 25 February 2026, entry to the country is only permitted with a valid ETA. The existence of the travel authorisation is checked strictly. Airlines operating flights to the United Kingdom no longer allow passengers to board if they do not have the required entry authorisation.

An ETA is required for every trip involving entry into the United Kingdom, whether for tourism, transit, family visits, attending business meetings, participating in conferences, or for short-term study stays of up to 6 months.

It is important to note that the ETA is also mandatory for those who continue their journey on another flight after arriving in the United Kingdom, provided that they pass through UK border control during their travel.

The fee for the permit is currently GBP 16. The ETA is valid for a maximum of two years, but no longer than the validity of the applicant’s travel document. If the travel document is replaced in the meantime, a new authorisation must be obtained. During its validity period, it entitles the holder to multiple entries, with each stay lasting no longer than 6 months.

It is recommended to submit the application at least 3 working days before travel.

The fastest way to apply remains the UK ETA mobile application, which is available in the App Store and Google Play Store.

ETA can also be applied for on the following official website.
