Changing jobs with an EU Blue Card

According to the authority’s current position, a change of employer or job position cannot be reported to the OIF through a simple notification.

According to the latest information issued by the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (OIF), the practice regarding job changes for third-country nationals holding an EU Blue Card changes.

According to the authority’s current position, a change of employer or job position (including a change of work location) cannot be reported to the OIF through a simple notification. In all such cases, an application for the extension of the EU Blue Card must be submitted. Employment in the new position or at the new workplace may only begin once the extension has been approved.

Under the previous guidance, employees who had held an EU Blue Card for more than one year were allowed to change jobs with a simple reporting to the authority with the new employment contract attached.

The OIF explains that the Hungarian legal provisions harmonising with the relevant EU Directive on the EU Blue Card — which are expected to simplify job changes — are still under preparation. Until the new regulations enter into force, the above-described procedural practice must be followed.

The OIF was unable to provide information on when the new Hungarian legislation harmonised with the EU Directive can be expected to be published.
