Change Regarding the Cultural Knowledge Exam

A fresh government decree has amended the exam requirement linked to long-term residence permits. Certain applicants are now exempt.

Under the Aliens Act effective from 2024, applicants for National Residence Cards and EU Residence Cards—both granting the right to long-term stay—must demonstrate compliance with the conditions of social coexistence in Hungary by passing a cultural knowledge exam.

A fresh government decree exempts persons under the age of 14 and individuals placed under guardianship from this exam requirement.

The new rule will enter into force on 14 August 2025 and will also apply to applications already in progress.

All other rules and the content of the cultural knowledge exam remain unchanged. The rule also remains unchanged that applicants renewing their long-term residence permit issued under the previous Immigration Law are not required to take the cultural knowledge exam.
