The National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (OIF) has recently extended the possibility of switching to the EU Blue Card to all third-country nationals working in Hungary.
According to the information published by the OIF, the aim of this change is to align the procedures with the EU directive governing the EU Blue Card and to better reflect the interests of foreign employees working in Hungary.
Under the previous procedural practice, switching to the EU Blue Card was not possible for
- third-country nationals holding a residence permit falling within the guest worker category, or
- third-country nationals residing in Hungary as entrepreneurs.
Under the new practice, however, the possibility of switching to the EU Blue Card is now open to all categories of third-country national employees, provided that they meet the conditions required for the EU Blue Card. As a result of this facilitation, a broader group of affected employees may obtain an EU Blue Card, which provides a longer-term and more stable residence status.
