As of 1 July 2024, another legislative change will enter into force, with which Act XC of 2023 will be amended again concerning the employment of third-country nationals in Hungary.
Three permit types are affected:
- Residence permit for employment purposes
- Guest-worker residence permit
- National Card
In the case of residence permits for employment purposes and guest worker residence permits, from 01.07. the Government will be competent to determine which nationals may apply for such permits. Currently, there are no restrictions in force based on applicants’ nationality, but after 01.07, the government may determine in a special decree which nationals will be entitled to apply for employment and guest worker residence permits.
With regard to the National Card, from 01.07.2024, according to the legislative amendment, the Government determines which citizens of countries can apply for such a permit. It is expected that the National Card will no longer be available only to Serbian and Ukrainian citizens. Based on the text of the legislative amendment, it is absolutely necessary that this citizenship list be published by 01.07.2024 in order to continue to apply for a National Card, even for Serbian and Ukrainian citizens.
